Bristol Laboratories for Advanced Dynamic Engineering, University of Bristol

The Bristol Laboratories for Advanced Dynamic Engineering (BLADE) is a world-class infrastructure which houses two superbly equipped laboratory buildings, one of which is the Earthquake and Large Structures Laboratory. BLADE is situated within the Engineering Faculty and is the result of an £18.5 million investment.

All parts of the BLADE laboratories are active and the major ones include:

  • Structural Dynamics
  • Electrical Drives
  • Non-destructive Testing 
  • Automated Control Technologies 
  • Geomechanics
  • Composites Materials 
  • Residual Stress and Structural Integrity 
  • Earthquake and Large Structures

In a total of 2000 m2 of laboratories, some 200 people are directing or conducting research (45 academic staff, 70 research assistants, 30 technicians, 60 research students) supported by research grants and contracts with a value in excess of £20 million.

The activities and initiatives carried out with industry benefit considerably from the extensive high-tech laboratory facilities and the pan-departmental environment which BLADE provides.
