The Bristol Earthquake and Engineering Laboratory Ltd (BEELAB) was set up in 1988 as a commercial company, wholly owned by the University of Bristol, to manage and market commercial activities for the Earthquake Engineering Research Centre (EERC). It promotes collaboration with industry, generates income to support further research and works on a range of consultancy projects with engineering firms, both in the UK and overseas.
BEELAB can offer the advanced technical skills and resources of a leading academic institution to solve complex problems in earthquake engineering and structural dynamics. These have included the analysis of major dams, major bridges, nuclear installations, hospital complexes and large chimneys.
Seismic qualification tests on mechanical equipment have also been carried out in the laboratory, whilst dynamic measurements (impact analysis and insitu monitoring) on full scale structures have been undertaken as part of integrity and safety assessments.
