This dynamic, emerging sector consists of around 1,300 enterprises, employs over 20,000 people and contributes around £1,300 million to the South West economy. Estimates say that the economy associated with the environment has the potential to develop a further 39,000 jobs and £670 million of additional output over the next few years.
There is strong collaboration between the region’s universities and business in developing the technologies and resources to meet the energy needs of the 21st Century. This and the unique environment makes South West England an unparalleled location for the environmental technologies sector.
University expertise is helping to ensure that the region is first for supporting the growth of the environmental technologies industry through leading research and consultancy, high quality training and development, business focussed students and graduates, and the provision of resources and facilities ranging from analytical laboratories to renewable energy test beds.

Low Carbon businesses across the South West are set to benefit from a low carbon, high skills initiative, worth up to £2.4m. The initiative has been funded in large part by the South West RDA (with a £1.2m investment) and will be co-ordinated by Universities South West. In partnership with numerous organisations throughout the South West, it aims to help the region in its move towards a low carbon economy through the provision of demand-led higher level skills for employees.
