Training & Development

By offering training and development opportunities you can foster an innovative working environment that attracts the best staff, improves staff retention and enables your business to grow.

All of our universities run a variety of full time and part time courses across a choice of academic disciplines. We can offer training opportunities that range from workplace seminars to tailor made courses leading to academic or professional qualifications.

Whether your business needs to keep up to date with the latest industry developments or to expand into new markets, our universities can provide the right training to meet your needs.

Training Options

  • Continuing Professional Development (CPD) allows staff to maintain, improve and broaden their knowledge and skills and develop the personal qualities required in their professional lives.
  • Work-based training offers learning in the workplace and employers play a central role in its design and delivery. Learning outcomes are achieved through activities based on the context of work or the workplace.
  • Distance learning is a flexible training option for people who do not wish to attend courses in person. Tutors and learners communicate by exchaging printed or electronic materials.
  • E-learning uses computer technology as the medium of instruction including online tuition such as lecture podcasts and online tutorials.
  • Blended learning combines distance or e-learning with some face-to-face instruction.

Tailored Training Provision for Low Carbon Businesses

Universities South West is currently running tailored training provision for businesses in the Low Carbon sector via our regional Low Carbon High Skills (LCHS) project. This provides the opportunity to set up flexible higher level skills training programmes customised to the needs of your business. One of our team of intermediaries can work with you to source cost-effective and viable training solutions that focus on bottom line impacts for your business.  More detail about the project can be found on the LCHS project web pages.

To find out more or to book a review of how your Low Carbon business could benefit from higher level skills provision, please email deborah.winwood@universitiessouthwest.ac.uk. This project evolved in part from Universities South West's Higher Level Skills Pathfinder Project (HLSPP) - a variety of examples of HLSPP work can be viewed on our success stories pages.
