£Millions invested in Low Carbon skills

Low carbon businesses across the South West are set to benefit from a low carbon, high skills initiative, worth up to £2.4m. The initiative has been funded in large part by the South West RDA (with a £1.2m investment) and will be co-ordinated by Universities South West. In partnership with numerous organisations throughout the South West, it aims to help the region in its move towards a low carbon economy through the provision of demand-led higher level skills for employees.

Universities South West was invited to provide a written submission and give oral evidence at a hearing of the South West Regional Committee, held at the House of Commons on Tuesday 2nd February.

MPs on the South West Select Committee were conducting a short follow-up inquiry to their work on the impact of the economic downturn on the South West and the Government’s response which was published in July last year.
 
South West businesses to benefit from graduate internship programme

Businesses in the South West are set to benefit from over 800 funded graduate internship placements, as the Government pledges to help graduates find work.
Extension of Higher Level Skills Pathfinder Project provides £55,000 extra funding for regional business training programmes

The South West Higher Level Skills Pathfinder Project (HLSPP) has been extended to July 2010 to focus on Low Carbon economic improvement through addressing the higher skills needs of businesses, and their employees. The project has been extended to provide extra support to key areas within the Low Carbon sector: marine energy (wind, wave and tidal), non-marine renewables, low carbon manufacturing and renewable construction.

The Rt Hon David Lammy MP, Minister for Higher Education, visited Bournemouth on 17th December to see at first how universities and regional organisations are working together in the South West to tackle the issue of graduate employment.
