HERDA-SW Launches a Job Shadowing
Scheme for Knowledge Transfer Practitioners.

The Job Shadowing Scheme provides a unique opportunity for Knowledge Transfer professionals to exchange ideas and best practice while developing or strengthening links with external partners or even simply gaining a fresh perspective of different management techniques. The Scheme is designed to be flexible and relaxed which is helped by both Host and 'Shadow' discussing objectives and practicalities beforehand.

Feedback shows the experience to be interesting and enjoyable as Lorna Tutton, Customer Care Specialist from the University of Bristol, who recently went to visit Tracy Wilson, Head of Commercial Marketing at the University of Plymouth explains, "I wanted to gain an overview of the challenges faced by HEIs when endeavouring to develop positive working relationships with business and industry and perhaps also get an indication of how these challenges are overcome. As my job role is unique it wasn't possible to provide a specific job match but I was matched with Tracy who has a degree of similarity and, therefore, although this wasn't perhaps a 'true job shadow', it was extremely useful and interesting. Tracy arranged meetings with a number of her colleagues who all work in a similar area and I was able to obtain a number of different interpretations and approaches to working with academic staff. It was an opportunity to discuss similarities and differences and to share best practice. The team of people with whom I met were friendly, hospitable and made a number of very useful suggestions for me to implement in my own role. In short, I would highly recommend the programme as I found the day extremely useful and have come away motivated to put some new ideas into practice."

For her part, Tracy also found the day a very useful exchange and if you'd like to know more from Tracy herself, why not offer to act as a host as she is looking for an exchange partner. You'll find details under Registered Participants.

A placement may happen in any willing organisation from any of our participating Higher Education Institutions, or from the private or public sectors - a number of SWRDA staff have already taken part. Anyone from Vice-Chancellor or CEO to a new member of staff is warmly invited to register.

South West England has an enormous pool of knowledge over such a wide range of activities and the Job Shadowing Scheme provides an excellent and practical way of sharing innovative ideas in the region.
