HERDA-SW secures funding for 2012 Project
14/03/2008

The HERDA-SW 2012 Project has been selected as the Legacy Trust’s South West’s preferred project and subject to final confirmation from Legacy Trust UK (LTUK), will bring in a total of £1.61m in funding over the next 4.5 years.  This was part of a competitive process and HERDA-SW’s bid was top against 6 other projects for the region.

In addition, subject to confirmation from LTUK on the match funding, HEFCE has approved a further bid for £1.5m over the next 2 years.  A business plan is now in production to take the project forward to the delivery stages.

The project, called RELAYS (Regional Education Legacy in Arts and Youth Sport) will involve all 14 of the region’s higher education institutions and will bring together sports and cultural events under two strands of activity.

The first strand is a series of cultural and sport school events located across the 3 sub-regions of the South West (peninsular, east and north) and delivery of cultural and sport / health curricular activity in the community via 3 hub clubs based in Bath, Gloucestershire and Plymouth.

The second strand consists of a relay of innovative new cultural and alternative sports festivals and events involving 6 annual HE based festivals, 3 non HE based festivals located in Bristol, Dorset/East Devon, and Cornwall and a new biennale, provisionally located at the Eden Project.

This project builds on the premise of legacy underpinning the London 2012 bid and aims to create a legacy of young people whose lives are changed by 2012.  Rachel Cowie, HERDA-SW's Executive Director, states "We look forward to working with a wide range of partners across the region to deliver this exciting project".
