The University of Plymouth is working to meet the need within the South West marine sector for managers within many different marine users to gain new knowledge on the future use of our seas and oceans, as rights of access, ability to undertake specific development activities and competition from multiple users becomes increasingly complex.
Aerospace Training South West
GE Aviation in Cheltenham has identified that its lack of an accredited graduate training scheme is putting it at a disadvantage in terms attracting high quality graduates. The University of the West of England will professionally review and assess its in-house graduate training scheme, recommend enhancements to meet academic standards and, if appropriate, develop these enhancements with a view to creating an accredited scheme.
Product Carbon Footprint and Labelling
In response from employer demand (Duchy Originals, Yeo Valley Farms, Walls Ice Cream, Bath Ales and Sustain Ltd) and the Carbon Trust, the University of Bath aims to develop an innovative training response to emerging requirements for “carbon thinking” across many roles and operations. Bite-sized distance learning will allow employers to develop in-house skills and to use joined up carbon analysis techniques to clarify product carbon footprint thinking.
Manufacturing Process Improvement - Machining and Metrology
Renishaw Plc, the world’s leading supplier of precision measurement metrology systems to the advanced engineering industry, has identified a need for improved training in manufacturing processes and technologies amongst engineering companies (particularly SMEs). By linking a group of leading manufacturing technology suppliers with the University of the West of England, academic expertise will be harnessed to meet the immediate needs for training in advanced manufacturing.
Web-based learning support for advanced mathematics
The Bristol and West of England Consortium for Continuing Professional Development in Aerospace (CPDA) run by the University of the West of England, Bristol and the University of Bristol are leading on this initiative. Gaps were identified in the mathematical competencies of graduate engineers in the aerospace industry and the project aims to produce customized packages of mathematical skills enhancement to cater for the needs of both graduates and employers.
Training Materials on Air Quality and Carbon Management
The University of the West of England will develop training materials on air quality and carbon management that meet the higher level skills needs of air quality professionals who are employed in Local Authorities and Environmental Consultancies in the South West. Blended learning involving online learning will lead to a CPD certificate for professional body purposes using 40 mini-modules of 5 credits each.
Plymouth City Council Childrens’ Service
The Open University in the South West and University College Plymouth St Mark and St John (Marjon) are working in collaboration with Plymouth City Council Children’s Services to develop innovative ways of meeting the need for workforce development utilising ‘qualifications escalators’ and e-learning methodology. This is phase two of a continuing project.
Sustainable Composites Technology
There is a growing demand for a reduced carbon footprint within the marine manufacturing and boatbuilding sector, achieved through waste elimination and resource efficiency. Two leading employers in the composite technology sector, Sustainable Composites Ltd (SCL) and Movevirgo Limited, will be collaborating with Falmouth Marine School and the University of Plymouth to inspire and educate the Marine Industry to use non-petroleum based resins in their products.
Professional Skills Programme for Community Arts/Media & Creative Education Practitioners
The community arts/ media and creative sector employs largely freelancers who are expected to have high standards in teaching skills, awareness of vulnerable groups, monitoring and evaluation, report writing, fundraising, marketing, legal requirements and financial management. The University of the West of England will develop training to meet the time constraints of freelancers, many who are educated to degree level in their specific art or media discipline.
