Over 200 South West businesses found out how to win by getting involved in the London 2012 games at an event today at the University of the West of England (UWE). Small to medium businesses heard how they could benefit from the opportunities for profit and growth before, during and after 2012. Olympic athlete Jason Gardener from Bath also gave an inspiring account of his success at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
Organised by the Regional Educational Legacy for Arts and Youth Sport (RELAYS) in partnership with Deloitte and Business Link, the event was aimed at taking the mystery out of tendering for contracts in the run-up to the Olympic Games.
Kim Chang, RELAYS Sports Business Fellow at UWE said, “RELAYS is delighted to welcome a wide range of businesses and enable them to find out how the CompeteFor tendering system works. The forum was about signposting businesses to the many opportunities and long-lasting benefits of engaging with the London 2012 games. It is the first business event in the South West to have won the accolade of being branded with the official Inspired by London 2012 logo by LOCOG (London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games).”
The forum was entitled ‘How to Win Business before and beyond 2012’ and was co-hosted in collaboration with Partners in Procurement, UWE and Team West of England.
Deloitte is the Official Professional Services Provider to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Sarah Sturt, Deloitte’s 2012 representative for the South West, said, “We have already worked with a number of South West businesses who successfully tendered for 2012 contracts and want to share our expertise with other businesses in the region. By bringing together companies who are interested in winning London 2012 contracts with those who have already successfully done so, we’re sharing the region’s knowledge and experience. Our aim is to ensure companies in the region get the best possible advice and don’t miss out on any business opportunities before, during and after London 2012.”
Helen Baker, who is Head of Procurement at UWE said, “Partners in Procurement are involved in explaining the myths of public sector tenders and signposting local businesses to tender opportunities. We really hope the session has been useful as we see local business as a key part of our sustainability strategy.”
