Extension of Higher Level Skills Pathfinder Project provides £55,000 extra funding for regional business training programmes
04/02/2010

The South West Higher Level Skills Pathfinder Project (HLSPP) has been extended to July 2010 to focus on Low Carbon economic improvement through addressing the higher skills needs of businesses, and their employees. The project has been extended to provide extra support to key areas within the Low Carbon sector: marine energy (wind, wave and tidal), non-marine renewables, low carbon manufacturing and renewable construction.
The aim of the extension is to:
  • explore and stimulate the demand for higher level skills development in these sub-sectors; and
  • liaise with those regional HEIs/FECs who have expertise in these areas to assist with translating the demand into appropriate provision.
To facilitate this initiative the project has retained two intermediaries from the original strand "stimulating demand", who will work collaboratively with employers, HEIs, FECs, REGEN SW, SWMAS and relevant SSCs. It is anticipated that this activity will dovetail into other regional low carbon related projects and activities that are underway.
As part of the extension to July, a small capacity building fund of £55K has been made available for short term higher skills provision development projects. HEI/FEC partners across the region are invited to bid to receive funding to contribute to projects which develop provision to meet employers' specific higher skills needs in the low carbon sectors identified above. The provision must be between Level 4 - 8 equivalent to qualify.
Managed by Universities South West and run by the universities in the region, businesses and non-profit organisations have much to gain through development of  higher level skills training to improve their business offering.
